Sketch Dump: Animi Series

Description

Bit of a large image, just a heads-up.

Considering that many of the people I watch are able to crank out these kinds of pics with some regularity, I figured it wouldn't be as much of a tremendous pain in the ass that it inevitably ended up being. Then I realized that most people have the good sense to use a tablet, making patching things like this together much easier.

Anyway, each of these sketches are numbered so I can give a short little descriptor for them.

1. The initial drafts of Charen's design. Nearly all of my designs are in danger of receiving a superfluous coat, and this one is no different. I also made the cape thing more elaborate.

2. An "armor" design draft for Marcher, Animi's main character. While the outfit is designed to be flexible, it probably doesn't provide as much protection as a standard ballistic vest. Also coat.

3-4. This is an earlier draft of the armor from 2. Instead of the coat, it featured a more traditional combat vest. I still really like the back-mounted tank design of 3, and have been mulling over how to incorporate it into the newer look.

I also designed the outfit initially to have a somewhat crass sense of humor, which why he's running around the battlefield with his junk hanging out so prominently.

5. A practice drawing of Marcher's weapon. From what I remember, it's an M1 mounted inside the M39 chassis. I think it's called the "sage" chassis or whatever by the maker. At least that's how it is with the Mk. 14. It's engraved (somewhere) with the name "Rosalette".

6. Here we have the most current version of Marcher's design. Looks and character wise, I'd say he's changed considerably from the previous version. A few people said his older designs looked a little young for his age, and they had a point. The curly hair was originally because I did this particular sketch as a "wet hair" concept, but I liked the curly look so much that this became his current design.

7-8-9. Marcher's newer design, but without the curly hair. These were done just before 6. This character is a much taller, and I suppose "manlier" protagonist than the previous incarnation. I tried to go for an aggressive and "unkind" look, if you will, and I think that turned out well enough. One other character trait, that I didn't really draw here is that Marcher is too tall and broad-shouldered to fit into a standard school uniform, which means he has to get a similar looking one off the internet.

10-11-12. Yuuki Futaba, an important character in Animi, almost to the point of being him being a secondary protagonist. Now that I think about it, this character is sort of like the old version of Marcher, at least conceptually. In a way, the original design with the prettier more feminine look became Yuuki, and was then replaced, in a sense, by the new protagonist.

In a nod to that whole "changing an old version of a character into someone else" thing, Marcher and Yuuki are actually cousins.

13. Speaking of different versions of a character, here's Marcher if he was a girl instead. I really like the girl version of Marcher, if only because she's considerably easier to draw than her male counterpart. Like the male version she's very tall and well endowed, and as such, can't actually get a school uniform that fits. The actual uniform can be seen at [link] and [link] , where as the one that she's wearing is a somewhat similar uniform bought online from a questionable source.

The thing between her legs that looks like a vibrator is actually an mp3 player, and she wears it as if it's a vibrator to piss off the school staff.

14. The female version of 2. As you'll see next, I tried going with a straight port of the "plates" for a female form, but I thought a minidress thing would look better. I kind of fudged the look of her hand holding her weapon, but whatever. That's why this is in a compilation and not by itself.

If you're wondering, the grainy sketches are really quick scribbles where I don't use nearly as much pressure. That's why they don't have the dark solid lines, and it makes erasing and correcting much easier.

15. As previously stated, a more direct interpretation of 2. I guess the "leotard armor" look is more inline with traditional comic book designs.

16. I don't actually remember what this outfit design was for. I guess it's leather clothes bits over a latex bodysuit.

17. A frilly dress that I kind of like. I think she's supposed to be holding an axe, but as you might expect, I was to lazy to actually draw it.

18. This hoodie look is actually based on unused concept art of Mario from Mario Strikers. Since both their names start with "Mar", I could get away with the M on the hood.

19. Yep, Marcher as a girl, yet again. She's just that much easier to draw. I got some bikini practice in, which I suppose turned out okay, but her arms are kind of messed up.

I actually draw her more with her hair up like in this sketch, but most of those drawings aren't good enough to make it here.

20-21. Just like regular Marcher had an old version, so does the female counterpart. This version was a lot shorter, and much more petite in figure. This smaller version is kind of like "Marcher as his own ideal girl". She also had a thing for butterfly knives. In addition, this incarnation didn't suffer from the whole "too big and stacked to fit into a standard uniform" issue.

22. Wearing a leather jacket over the gym uniform for whatever reason. As you might have noticed, as a girl Marcher almost always wears thighhighs, even when it might not make sense to do so.

23. A new character, Miina Futaba. This is Yuuki's mom. She's an important supporting character. Miina and her son's relation to Marcher is also why I decided to give him that curly hair to match. Miina is also the CEO and majority shareholder of the world's largest financial conglomerate, making her the richest person in the world, in the Animi story. It also makes Yuuki a lonely rich boy, and Marcher isn't exactly a fan of rich folk.

i don't get why you don't have more people looking at your art
this stuff is RIDICULOUSLY detailed, more than like 99% of DA
without glancing, i'd think this was stuff for an actual anime...
